The USS Constitution 1812 Marine Guard embarks on 7 Underway Demonstrations annually during the ship’s sailing season. During each Underway, USS Constitution fires a 21-gun salute which is returned by the Concord Independent Battery at Fort Independence on Castle Island with the 1812 Marine Guard rendering honors on the main hatch. The ship also fires an additional 17-gun salute while passing U.S. Coast Guard Sector Boston, the former site of Edmund Hartt’s shipyard where Constitution was built and launched. During the 17-gun salute the 1812 Marine Guard fires a three-round volley on the main hatch.

During the Underway, the Unit engages with the guests onboard teaching Marine Corps, U.S. Navy and War of 1812 history as well as maintaining the ship’s waist clear of guests for navigational requirements.

USS Constitution went underway from Charlestown Navy Yard for the 225th birthday celebration, with Cmdr. Billie J. Farrel, the first female to command the oldest ship in the United States Navy.
